“One sunny fall afternoon when I was 11 years old, a friend and I stood alone deep in the woods behind our neighboring rural Kansas homes. After hearing what sounded like a small rodent running through the leaves on the ground near us, we noticed a large wolf spider sitting atop a bright white rock, staring at us with its many eyes. Out of both fear and curiosity, my friend shot the spider with the small pellet gun he was carrying. The spider died at once, and we realized that the “rock” on which it was perched was actually a giant egg sac. It immediately exploded and hundreds of tiny spiders went scrambling in all directions. We stood still for several minutes viewing the spectacle in awe, each of us paying our own quiet homage to the corpse of this mother of hundreds.
The musical ideas for this piece were inspired by the original electronic score I composed in 2003 for a University of Texas at Austin production of Calderon’s play Sueño, directed by Matt Huff.”
