Kyle Kindred: Music

InundaciĆ³n (for violin, cello, and piano)

Inundación was commissioned by the Oregon Bach Festival Composer Symposium in 2004 for the celebration of George Crumb’s 75th birthday. The work was premiered in July of 2004 by chamber group Third Angle (with composer at the piano) at the festival in a series of performances including works by George Crumb, David Crumb, and nine other new works commissioned for the occasion. This work was inspired by a one-minute movie clip depicting the struggling victims of a raging flood. Two original motives from this music were expanded to make this seven-minute piece which is packed with the same relentless intensity seen in the film. The title is a Spanish cognate (it just sounds better in Spanish!) for the English word “inundation,” which is a synonym for the word “flood.” Not necessarily referring to the meaning of “flood” involving water, the title and the music suggest the more general feeling of being overwhelmed.
